Originally built in the late 1920s, the California Hotel is a neighborhood landmark and a symbol of West Oakland’s rich cultural history. once known as a meeting place for musical greats like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and later James Brown, it was converted into affordable housing in the 1980’s.
Wooden Window worked with Cahill Contractors to carefully catalog and restore, or match-replace, more than 400 of the hotel’s historic windows. Using local workers, we stripped old paint materials through steam stripping in a dedicated, sealed, window rehabilitation booth, constructed specifically for the project—minimizing the release of any potentially hazardous materials.
The upgrades to the hotel are part of a larger community effort to enliven the surrounding area.
